Previous Work: Scoping and Analysis

Phase 1: Analysing the Policy- Political-Operational landscape

In 2022 the Open Lunar Foundation invested in exploring the creation of a Lunar Registry that was designed to encourage global multi-stakeholder participation and representation, based on consensus-building and inclusion. It is a tool to help foster openness, trust, transparency, representation and social responsibility between all actors on the Moon.

The team provided research and analysis on several areas including analysing the need for a lunar registry, exploring its potential opportunities, incentivies and barriers from a political and operational perspective as well as past precedents and case studies.

The Registry has always been a multistakeholder project, with research, analysis, and construction undertaken with the support of Lunar actor and relevant expert support. For this phase we consulted with a select group of Lunar stakeholders and policy experts to ensure the project moved forward in the best way.

White Paper- Bright Moon: Creating a Global Lunar Registry of Activities

This white paper explores the creation of a dedicated Lunar Registry to catalogue critical mission details such as the launching state, operating actor, location, time, and more.

Stakeholder Engagement

In keeping with our multistakeholder approach. The team consulted with key technical experts and Lunar stakeholders on how best to construct, from a technical perspective, a Lunar Registry. (Use an image here from any talk we’ve done)

Stakeholder and Media Engagement

  • The team engaged in media outreach including Op-Eds in Comment Central and Slate targetting policy and scientific audiences.

  • The team also provided analysis on interesting elements of the research throughout, published by Open Lunar here.

White Paper: Prototyping a Lunar Registry of Missions, Objects, and Activities

Building on Phase 1, this paper provides actionable recommendations for the construction of the Registry in several key areas: technical infrastructure, functional prototyping, design, and legal considerations, and a phased development work plan.

Previous Work: Building A prototype

In 2023 the Open Lunar Foundation invested further in the Registry Project after a panel of lunar stakeholders, actors, and experts approved there was a case for it. The second phase saw the team explore how a prototype might be constructed from a technical perspective and laying out a proposed roadmap for how to construct it.
