Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Lunar Ledger?
The Lunar Ledger is a secure, transparently managed database that helps organizations, researchers, and the broader community share, track, and coordinate details about lunar surface missions. Developed by the Open Lunar Foundation, it acts as a public registry of mission metadata, like landing locations, mission objectives, and timelines, to support safe, sustainable lunar exploration. By making information accessible, the Lunar Ledger aims to improve situational awareness and cooperation between a diverse range of lunar stakeholders.
Who is the Lunar Ledger for?
The Lunar Ledger is designed for anyone interested in lunar activities. This includes:
General public and space enthusiasts, who can view information about past missions
Organizations and companies planning or operating lunar missions, who can securely share data and coordinate efforts
Academic researchers and policy experts interested in lunar operations and governance
What roles exist on the platform?
Public Visitors: Anyone can access public information about historic and ongoing missions without logging in.
Mission Operators: Registered organizations can securely submit and manage their own mission data (both public and private).
Advisors: Invited experts can review public records and provide feedback or flag discrepancies.
Administrators: The Open Lunar Foundation oversees account approvals, data quality, and platform operations.
Note: Account registration is by invitation/approval at this early stage; accounts are set up by our admin team and linked to your organization if you are an operator.
What kind of information does the Lunar Ledger collect?
To coordinate missions safely and avoid operational conflicts, the Ledger collects a basic set of information such as (but not limited to):
Mission names and operators
Landing sites or main activity locations
Mission timelines and objectives
Contact information for mission leads
Operational status and (non-sensitive) risk or hazard info
Private business or technical details are never shared publicly. Operators have clear control over sharing private details.
How is data privacy handled?
We take data privacy and security seriously. All mission data fields are clearly labeled as “public” or “private,” and only authorized users see non-public fields. Organizations always maintain control over their own data, and private details are never shared without explicit consent. All system access is logged and monitored. For details, see our Privacy Policy.
Can anyone see or edit my data?
Public mission data is viewable by anyone. Only the submitting organization (“operator”) and platform administrators can see or edit private fields. Other operators may formally request access to private information in specific scenarios (e.g., to prevent operational conflicts), but you are always notified and asked for consent in advance.
How do I submit or update mission information?
If you are a recognized lunar operator, once your organization’s account is set up, you will receive log-in details and can add or update mission information securely via the dashboard. All new submissions are reviewed by an administrator before publication to ensure accuracy and quality.
How do I report an error or suggest an improvement?
If you notice any incorrect information or have feedback about the platform, you can use the “flag” or “feedback” tools in the dashboard (if logged in), or contact us directly at [support email]. We value community input to keep the database accurate and evolving.
How often is the Lunar Ledger updated?
The Lunar Ledger is updated regularly as new missions are announced, and as organizations submit or revise mission details. The beta phase includes ongoing data quality checks and platform improvements shaped by user feedback, with all major updates communicated to users.Who runs and governs the Lunar Ledger?
The Open Lunar Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to open, collaborative lunar governance, develops and stewards the Lunar Ledger with input from a global community. We are committed to transparency and neutrality, and welcome feedback to shape the Ledger’s future.
How do I get support or more information?
